چکیده

KATZ, R. J. Animal model of depression: Effects of electroconvulsive shock therapy. NEUROSCI. BIOBEHAV. REV. 5(2) 273-277, 1981.wWe have previously identified a potentially accurate and specific behavioral and neuroendocrine model of depression in the rat. The most effective somatic treatment for severe depressions is electroconvulsive shock therapy (ECT). ECT was investigated in the prexlinical model using a factorial design, and was found to be a specific and effective treatment both behaviorally and endocrinoiogically. These results suggest the model may successfully reflect the efficacy not only of pharmacological but additionally of other types of somatic treatments.

Induction of choline rise in the rat hippocampus by electroconvulsive shock treatment

Human hippocampal choline decreases in major depression episodes. This decrease was recently measured by our group and it has been found that its level normalizes during electroconvulsive therapy. We hypothesized a hippocampal choline increase in the rat brain under electroconvulsive shock (ECS) treatment in an animal model of depression (Learned Helplessness). Method: Rat hippocampi were inves...

The effect of electroconvulsive therapy on the levels of oxidative stress factors in the prefrontal cortex of depressed rats

Background and Objective: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the effective and less complicated methods for treatment of depression in cases of resistance to common treatments. Given the fundamental role of pre-frontal cortex on changing the mood of depression-related behaviors in depressed patients, the effects of electroconvulsive therapy on enzymatic activity of this cortex were taken...

Behavioral function improvement of prefrontal cortex in treated depressed rats by ECT and ketamine

Background and Objective: Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders. Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is one of the effective methods for treatment of depression. Regarding the stimulatory effect of glutaminergic system on the progression of depression, the effect of ketamine as one of the most important inhibitors of this system has been investigated on the effectiveness of ECT. ...

Dose-Response Relationship of Clinical Effi-cacy and Side Effects of Electroconvulsive Therapy

Background: The electrical dose selected for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) must have an acceptable efficacy and no or minimal cognitive side-effects. We evaluated the clinical efficacy and cognitive side-effects of ECT in relation to the stimulus dose administered. Method: This study assessed 71 depressed patients who were treated with bilateral ECT. For evaluation of depressive and cognitive...

Behavioral and molecular responses to electroconvulsive shock differ between genetic and environmental rat models of depression.

Depression׳s causes play a role in individuals׳ different responses to antidepressant treatments, which require advancements. We investigated the mechanisms behind and responses to a highly effective antidepressant treatment, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), in rat models with different (genetic or environmental) depression causes. Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats and Wistar rats treated with chronic un...
